Car accidents, sports injuries, and other major events that bring trauma to the brain can result in brain injury and affect a person’s cognitive abilities. Different cognitive impairments can result.
Our adult speech therapy clinic in Forney can help with problems of speech and cognition for these patients. Common issues addressed in speech therapy sessions include memory loss; difficulty with executive functioning such as planning, scheduling, and multi-tasking; impairments to higher-level problem solving and reasoning; impaired communication skill with “no filter” inappropriate utterances; all combined with lack of awareness of their deficits. These patients may or may not exhibit a visible language disorder or language problem, but they do indicate cognitive shortcomings. This kind of accident can occur at any age. We thank God they’re still with us, help them heal with compassionate adult speech therapy, and pray for a full recovery.
The brain is extremely powerful but also very fragile. One bleed up there can cause a whole mess of problems for that person and their loved ones, in various life areas. Depending on the location of the stroke in the brain and its severity, myriad issues can result that affect the person’s quality of life.
If the stroke affects the nervous system, which it commonly does, the patient will endure challenges to all motor control – speech and certain sound utterances as well as mobility become major concerns, and language skill is often impeded. Cognitive deficits can and often do also result. At Precision Speech Therapy, we work on all of the areas related to cognition and communication / language comprehension and usage.
Precision Speech Therapy shares suite space with Precision Physical Therapy (a wife-husband team). Because therapy for adult stroke patients usually involves both speech therapy and physical therapy, this proximity is extremely convenient for our patients. We are so pleased to extend the convenience of one-stop therapy services to all of our stroke recovery patients, making it easier for these patients to get back to work and their other life activities as quickly as possible.
Neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s and other dementia varieties, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, Huntington’s, and ALS can bring about a need for speech therapy, again perhaps to help with cognitive decline more than clear linguistic articulation. When working with these patients, we strive to keep them living independently and at home as long as possible.
Whereas the other types of impairments tend to improve, this type of impairment can only anticipate further decline. As a result, caregiver training is an essential component of speech therapy for these patients. Because these conditions are progressive, it is important that the family and/or other caregivers be aware of what to expect as their loved one progresses through different stages of the disease. As the disease progresses, the person’s condition and symptoms change, so adult speech therapy focuses on different elements.
For communication and language disorders of any kind, from any cause, speech therapy service can help. We offer language therapy and can improve cognitive and communication skill. If you or a loved one is in need of some therapy help, don't hesitate to contact us. We will develop a treatment plan and get them on the road to recovery.
Sometimes people notice that they seem to be having more trouble swallowing than before. Maybe they’re choking on their food, getting food stuck in their throat, or having difficulty swallowing.
The technical term for these symptoms in adults is dysphagia. The cause for this, particularly if there was a clear and sudden onset, may be the beginning of a neurological condition, or a small stroke of which the patient was unaware. Muscle weakness and nerve involvement can result. Part of adult speech therapy in this area works to strengthen the muscle system around the vocal cords.
A healthcare provider is often consulted with these symptoms to either identify or rule out underlying conditions that may have precipitated the swallowing impairment.
Throat and swallowing impairments can also conjoin with laryngeal (throat) cancer and oral cancers. These types of cancers can certainly cause significant issues with chewing, swallowing, and communicating.
Many individuals in this population may be undergoing chemo and/or radiation treatments, had surgical revisions, and be placed on a feeding tube to sustain nutrition during this time. Speech therapy during this time is crucial to maintain functions of swallowing in order to get off of a feeding tube or possible tracheostomy tube following treatment. Individuals undergoing or completed chemo-radiation treatment in conjunction with adult speech therapy sessions that focus on rehabilitating the swallowing muscles significantly improve outcomes.
We also offer adult speech therapy to patients that have undergone a total or partial laryngectomy, hemiglossectomy, or surgical facial revisions resulting in inability to communicate properly. We have trained professionals to support and train use of electrolarynx, voice prosthesis, and augmentative communication devices in order to effectively communicate with loved ones.
